Effective Communication Helps Sell Art

Just as we communicate with our art, we need at some point, to communicate in writing to connect with potential buyers and sell our art.  Whether you are entering shows, have a website, deal with galleries, market your art on social media, or do commissions—there will be written communications that become a necessity.   Then of course there is verbal communication with YouTube, videos, speaking to groups, teaching and speaking with clients!! Wouldn’t it be a dream if creating our art work was all we had to do and the rest just happened by magic! At a bare minimum, a working...

Designing with Feng Shui (Wind & Water)

Feel like experimenting—finding a different way to create and evaluate your art work? Harmony/balance is one of the principles of designing. It is also the goal of Feng Shui. When we were building our new home in SC, I decided to use some Feng Shui principles as we designed and decorated and I applied these principles to the artwork that went into some of the rooms. That’s when I found out how much fun it was to plan a design and evaluate finished paintings using these ancient principles. Originating in China over 3000 years ago, Feng Shui focuses on creating...

Does Your Art Tell a Story?

Does Your Art Tell a Story?

I have heard over and over from judges and workshop teachers that a painting or work of art needs to “tell a story”.  I keep asking myself, “exactly what kind of story?”  Now if I paint people walking on the beach or children building a sand castle—I have a story.  But what about a beautiful floral or a wildlife portrait or an abstract —how do I tell a story here? Recently in “American Watercolor”, author Kelly Kane quoted master painter Alvaro Castagnet—“Art is not prettiness; it’s mood, feeling.  If you think art has to be pretty, you’re missing the point—when...

In between painting “sessions”—let’s say you are taking a break for a couple of days. Cleaning Your Paint Brushes

Now that you have chosen quality brushes from Kingart, you will want to take care of them so your brushes will last and stay in good condition. Properly cleaning brushes is the best way to keep them working for you. Let’s start with a brand new brush: New brushes come with “sizing” in them to protect their shape. This sizing makes the brush feel stiff to the touch. Please take a moment and wash out that sizing with clean water and a tiny amount of soap. Gently wipe the brush dry. Some brushes come with a clear plastic tube over...

Creative Connections: Passion and Flow

Our “ART SPEAK” blog has been discussing creativity. Creativity can mean to arrange old into new forms, give birth to a new realism, or a new way of thinking, acting, and behaving.  Our Creative Connections series is delving into creativity through the five words: play, passion, flow, focus, and risk.  We have talked about play (see last blog) so let’s talk about PASSION AND FLOW and how they can affect your creativity. The PASSION you have for creating shows in your art work.  It engages the viewer as it reveals part of YOU.  It often takes courage and self-confidence to...
